Gepps Cross Senior School is a government school within the Department of Education and Children's Services (DECS), educating secondary age students with complex learning needs.

We are participants in the Eduction Works Project and we will be co-located at a custom built Inner North Senior Multi Campus in 2011.

information about our school
Gepps Cross Senior School is designed to be a safe and secure teaching and learning environment. The School's design is flexible so that it can cater for the learning needs and styles of a range of students with disabilities
involvement with student learning

-Parents, carers and community members are encouraged to be involved in the life of the school. Parents and carers are encouraged to support learning by:

-Taking an active interest in their child's learning

-Engaging in a cooperative relationship with their child's teacher

-Assisting the school in implementing a shared set of values and expectations
-Taking up opportunities to participate in the school's decision - making structure, processes and activities
-Communication between the school and parents and carers is high priority and is encouraged though the daily use of student communication books, Parent/Caregiver meetings, Negotiated Curriculum Plan meetings and regular newsletters.
pathways after school
Possible post school pathways include:
> placement in supported work sites
> community access programmes
> open employment

> employment with community based work related agencies

curriculum
The Curriculum is designed to meet students' individual needs and learning styles, subjects available include:
> Practical Literacy and Numeracy
>Vocational Education
> Health and Personal Development
> Independent Living Skills
> Selected Subjects at TAFE Sites
> Technology
> Recreation and Leisure
> Communication and Social Skills

The Curriculum provided for students is framed by the Negotiated Curriculum Plan (NCP). The DECS Curriculum frameworks are used to incorporate individual student learning needs for both compulsory and post compulsory age students. Some students participate in Vocational Education and Training (VET) subjects.

Teachers develop programs that meet the individual student's current educational needs. The skills required for personal, social and vocational independence and work are incorporated into all subjects.

The end point of schooling is reached when a student has participated in 16 units of the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE). Four units are delivered each year once the student is 15 years of age

facilities
canteen
The School Canteen is run by students and teachers as a SACE Unit with accreditation for the unit ' Work and the Community'. Students plan the daily menu, work out costing for the food, do the shopping and prepare the food. When the lunch bell rings the students serve the meals and handle the money all having fun while learning valuable cash handling and food service skills. top

resource centre

Our Resource Centre has over 3000 titles available for loan, there are DVDs, CDs, Books, Videos, and Software. Classses make time to use the reading area with comfortable lounges and bean bags. The space is a friendly informal environment used as a meeting place for staff and student groups.

kitchens
At Gepps Cross we have two classrooms with complete kitchens. Once a fortnight Barbara and Deb's class chooses recipes for lunch and always a dessert. Students plan the meal, shop for the food at the Adelaide Central Market or the local Supermarkets then prepare the meal and eat as a social group. Of course then it's time to clean up together. Meal planning and cooking are an excellent way to put in place the theory behind nutrition, balanced diet and budgeting.
school bus
The School has a modern school bus for students, that takes us everywhere including supervised Swimming at Strathmont Centre, supported workshops at Hands on, supervised short camps and day trips. Excursions to the Variety Club Party, Industry visits, museums and the Art Gallery. Gepps Cross has an excellent recycling program and the the bus is regularly used to take our garden waste and recycling to the depot..
computer room
Students have access to computers in every classroom and two computer rooms. The IT facilities are used every day for curriculum and available for students at lunch time. We very proudly have a ratio of 1 computer for every 2 students. We encourage students to produce a variety of multimedia work on computers including Flash animation, digital photography, video and web page construction. Digital cameras and video are available for school projects and excursions
garden
Students at Gepps Cross have their own gardens where the vegetables grown are used in the canteen. Students regularly take home vegetables that they have planted and watched grow. Even the mulberries from our tree are picked and used in spring for fruit salad lunches.
gym
We have a large gymnasium for assemblies, exercise, basketball, volleyball, indoor cricket, trampoline and softball. The gym is also available for students at lunch time. The gym is used by groups from other schools and outside school hours is available for hire.
movie theatre
We now have a movie theatre that classes can book to watch video for class work or fun at lunch time in winter or hot summer days.
